About Me

I am a fanatical technical innovator, using my 25 years of experience to build products and services from the latest Cloud offerings to bring value and benefits to organisations.

20 Years Experience – A Rounded Technical Innovator

My career spans the public and private sectors in the UK and I have industry knowledge & experience from the following verticals: Healthcare, Manufacturing, Automotive, Digital Media, Telecoms, Web Development, Professional Services and Policing. This background often gives me a running start when working with a new client

I believe that successful cloud migrations depend on a full understanding of the on-premise tech-stack in use. My technical background helps me to build a complete picture of your services and dependencies so you can be rest-assured that everything will be migrated correctly, first time.

I know my stuff..

My technical expertise allows me to fully analyse your current infrastructure and services. If you’re already operating in the AWS cloud, I can reduce your costs, improve your architecture and address any security weaknesses.

I can easily switch between open source technology stacks and their cloud equivalents but I also know about the costs of traffic flow in & out of the cloud, the multi-tiered points of security and how to achieve the principle of least privilege.

I “speak the lingo” of DevOps and Developers as well as AGILE evangelists. I have often been seen as an effective bridge between technical intricacies and the business needs.

  • Mysql, Postgres, MS SQL Server, MariaDB, MongoDB, Hadoop

  • RDS, S3, DynamoDB, EBS, EFS & Redshift, EMR

  • Python, C#, C++

  • Consuming RESTful services, API Gateway, SOAP & JSON Web tokens

  • Standards: ISO 27001 & Cyber Essentials

  • Terraform and CloudFormation

cloud technologies

With 25 years experience of on-prem & cloud architecture, I design and implement innovative cloud solutions that enable customers to achieve their digital transformation goals. On one such project, docker was used to provide microservices, these were running on several EC2 instances. Costs were mounting, so I migrated the client to running their containers on EKS. A mixture of spot and on-demand instances were used to reduce costs while Kubernetes provided higher availability and allowed the client to remain cloud-agnostic.

one solution does not fit all

I do not use existing architecture templates. While your business use-case may resonate well with existing architecture models, no perfect fit exists and the details can make or break a migration.

Why not take a look at my service approaches? They form the building blocks I use for creating a completely custom service for you.

how I got here

I live and breathe technology, from an early age I learnt to program games using BBC Basic and went on to study programming at University learning languages like C++, Java and Visual Basic.  While at university I regularly dismantled my PC and upgraded it in every way I could.

My passion for technology has always led me to create innovative solutions for the companies I have worked with.

Below are a few examples taken from my career:

  • S3, EC2, Lambda and SQS used to build a photo processing application for a client supporting 1000’s of photos uploaded daily
  • Apex Code, SOQL and SQL used to create a login application which helped in gaining Cyber Essentials accreditation for a company.
  • Docker cluster migrated to ECS Fargate Instances to provide a completely scalable serverless cluster which was highly available over 3 Availability Zones
  • Built a server from old servers & installed JIRA, then moved the dev team over to using Scrum & JIRA.
  • Understanding of Network, Cloud, PC and Server security, used to deliver ISO 270001 Accreditation for a company.
  • Using C# and MS SQL Server to process TB’s of healthcare records (big data)
  • Created a cloud app which removed a commercial blocker from a new product and helped to support revenue goals.
  • ASP & MS SQL Server was used to consume an XML traffic feed on the Devon & Cornwall Constabulary website.  Also a police auctions service.
  • Just for fun: I created a Raspberry Pi-powered RC car which could be driven via a near-real-time camera feed, or self-piloting using sensors.

I’ve worked with some amazing organisations.
